Pajáros de Borikén y la historia de los indios :: Red-tailed hawk - Piece 2 (24x36)
Many say the hawk (guaraguáo) provides us insight on moments we need to show more courage. So, when one flew over me and it's call echoed through the sky, I sat and thought about it a bit. Thought about not who and what I needed to save, but what I needed to be more courageous about in myself.
This painting is a collection of that moment. It takes me back to the desert in Borikén where the hawks soar the sky. It reroots me to the cactus (tuná) and flowers (aná) that flourish on my beautiful motherland. It reminded me of my people, the Taínos, who knew the hawk well and its voice.
This piece 'pajaros de borikén y los indios taíno' is 2 of 3 paintings that will tell you the story of my people. My courage is keeping their story alive and living it true each day within each painting.

About the Red-Tailed Hawk
Most common roadside raptor across much of North America. Often perches atop telephone poles, light posts, and edges of trees. Incredible variation in plumages, including less common dark morphs and various regional differences. Eastern adults have brilliant reddish-orange tail and pale underparts with obvious band of dark marks across belly. Western birds are typically darker. Immatures do not have a red tail.
